Kalamazoo Balloon Fest
The 2026 Kalamazoo Balloon Fest lifts off today at Gull Meadow Farms in Richland and runs through Sunday.

One of the biggest draws is the balloon glow, which is happening tonight and tomorrow night around 8:30 P.M. weather permitting. Unlike a typical launch, the balloons stay grounded on the launch field during the glow, lighting up the farm for about 30 minutes once inflated.

GRPL Social Justice youth book club open house
Grand Rapids Public Library is rolling out the red carpet for young readers this weekend! The library kicks off its "Social Justice Begins With Me" book club with a free open house Friday afternoon at the Main Library.

Kids ages four to 11 can register for the monthly series and pick up this year's books, with topics like racial justice, human rights, and gender equity through books and discussion. The kickoff runs from 3:30 to 5:30 P.M.

AQS Quiltweek show
AQS Quiltweek is back in Grand Rapids now through Saturday with over 15,000 attendees expected at DeVos Place for this thirteenth annual show.

Over 600 quilts will be on display, competing for nearly $55,000 in cash prizes including a $10,000 "Best Of Show" award! Shoppers can also brows more than 180 vendor booths at the Merchant Mall, and visitors can get their quilts appraised by certified experts.

Admission is $15 a day for the general public, with show hours running 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. today. Tomorrow's show runs from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.

Endless Opportunities back to school celebration
Endless Opportunities is preparing for its annual back to school celebration. The Grand Rapids nonprofit was founded in 2011 to help families navigate education.

The organization now runs mentoring programs for middle and high schoolers across West Michigan. This weekend's free event offers school supplies, haircuts, and hairstyles for kids heading back to class.

It happens Sunday, August 23 from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the Baxter Community Center. For more information, go to endlessopportunities.org.

Bibleway Outreach block party
Bibleway Outreach is throwing its annual block party tomorrow from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. at 1045 Cass Ave SE in Grand Rapids.
