September is Campus Fire Safety Month, and while fire safety should be practiced year-round, the back-to-school season is a good time to be reminded of fire safety tips, especially for college students living on campus.
Firefighter Michael McLeieer with E.S.C.A.P.E. Inc. returned to the Morning Mix to share important safety reminders as well as resources for students.
The most common microwave fires that happen in dorm rooms are from overcooked popcorn. Michael advises to stay within sight of your microwave, and similarly, do not leave candles unattended if you are burning a candle. Many schools do not allow candles to be burned, so it is important to look at your school's specific rules regarding candle use (although electric, flameless candles are still your best bet!). Be sure to leave a one-foot diameter around the candle should you burn one.
Michael also advises that overloaded extension cords, power strips, and outlets are one of the leading causes of fire in college housing. Never daisy-chain power strips together and be mindful of how much you are plugging in.
Most importantly, take all fire alarms seriously and plan two ways out of every room. Exits should never be blocked.
