ALLENDALE, Mich. — An Allendale man died of his injuries after being hit by a vehicle on 68th Avenue near Lake Michigan Drive.
The 81-year-old was attempting to cross the road in front of his home using a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by passing traffic just before 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
The 25-year-old Grand Rapids resident driving southbound on 68th Avenue was not able to avoid the crash. Officials do not believe alcohol, drugs, or speed to be a factor.
The fire department blocked several roads, including southbound 68th Avenue from Lake Michigan Drive on, Avery and Scott Streets.
