DETROIT (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a jail inmate after a struggle inside an ambulance on a freeway north of downtown Detroit.

Wayne County Undersheriff Daniel Pfannes told the Detroit Free Press that a private ambulance company was transporting the inmate from a hospital to a Wayne County jail division when the struggle occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Friday while the vehicle traveled from westbound Interstate 94 to Interstate 75.

Pfannes says the inmate, a 23-year-old Detroit man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

The deputy was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

Pfannes said the Detroit Police Department and the Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting. The sheriff’s office will also conduct an internal investigation.

The ramp remained closed for hours after the shooting.
