KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Philanthropist Jon Stryker has donated $20 million to Kalamazoo College to establish a scholarship program for students of color, first-generation students and those from lower-income families.

The school in southwestern Michigan says Friday that the Jon L. Stryker Future Leaders Scholarship program starts with the 2018-19 academic year and will provide $2 million annually over the next decade.

Kalamazoo College says Stryker’s gift is intended to encourage others to contribute $20 million toward scholarships as part of the school’s next fundraising campaign.

Stryker is a member of the college’s board of trustees. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the school in 1982 and a master’s in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley.

Kalamazoo College says Stryker has donated $66 million to the school.
