Icy roads lead to deadly head-on crash in Barry County

Posted

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — A 73-year-old man died in a two-vehicle head-on collision Saturday evening.

Barry County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to the area of M-37 and Mixer Road regarding a two-vehicle head-on crash. The preliminary investigation showed that northbound and southbound vehicles struck each other head-on, fatally injuring the driver of the southbound vehicle, Robert Mayberry, 73, of the Fine Lake area in Johnstown Township.

The investigation showed that the northbound vehicle entered the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid a rear-end crash and struck Mayberry’s southbound vehicle head-on. He was taken to Sparrow Hospital and the occupants of the northbound vehicle were transported by ambulance to a Kalamazoo area hospital.

All occupants were believed to be wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Icy roads and deteriorating road conditions appear to be contributing factors in this crash. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved.

The Michigan State Police, Mercy Ambulance Service, Life Care Ambulance Service and Hastings and Johnstown fire departments assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Barry County Sheriff’s Department.
