Elderly woman hit & killed while crossing Berrien County street

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — A 71-year-old woman died when she was struck by a semi while crossing a five-lane street Tuesday night.

At 8:42 p.m. Tuesday, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a semi-truck on South 11th Street near Stateline Road in Niles Township. The investigation showed that Connie Brown, 71, was crossing South 11th when she was struck by a commercial vehicle.

South 11th Street is a five-lane roadway that runs north and south. Brown was wearing dark clothing and there are no street lights in the immediate area.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was Ernest Rhodes, 44, of Roseville. He was driving for George Campbell & Sons Inc. of Detroit and was transporting U.S. mail from Detroit to South Bend, Ind.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Team was activated. The Michigan State Police Commercial Enforcement Vehicle Division also assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
