POLKTON TWP., Mich. - One person is dead after a morning crash along I-96.
The one-vehicle crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-96 at about mile marker 13. The vehicle left the road and went down the embankment and struck a tree. It then caught fire.
Ottawa County deputies tell our crew at the scene that witnesses saw the vehicle driving erratically at a high speed when it went off the road. The vehicle exploded after hitting the tree. Witnesses attempted to pull the driver from the vehicle, but were unable due to the heat.
Westbound I-96 was down to one lane for a few hours this morning.
