GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Police are investigating an assault that sent a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Tuesday night.

Police say they were sent to the area of Benjamin Avenue and Alexander Street. There they found a man suffering critical injuries after being attacked.

Police are still determining the nature of the assault and are actively searching for suspects.

While police were investigating, a man unrelated to the assault got into one of the parked cruisers and drove it a short distance, police said. The unit was found around the corner from where it was stolen.

Officers believe the suspect to be suffering from a mental disorder. They know his identity but have not yet arrested him.
