Man seriously injured after train hits car in Ottawa County

ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 36-year-old Grand Rapids man was seriously injured after his car was hit by a train Thursday.

The crash happened near the intersection of 64th Avenue and Chicago Drive at about 3:50 p.m., according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials say Angel Rutiaga was southbound on 64th and drove onto the tracks tracks as he was waiting to turn right onto Chicago.   The eastbound train hit the right rear of his vehicle.

Rutiaga was taken to the hospital with serious internal injuries, according to the sheriff’s department.   No other injuries were reported.
