WEST OLIVE, Mich. -- It's time for drivers to watch for those flashing lights on school buses and school speed limit signs.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says they will have at least one officer at every school district this year making sure drivers are obeying traffic laws.
"When the schools are starting, basically what we do is we try to get out there to have a presence, you know," says Sergeant Derek Christensen of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. "But we want people to slow down and we want people to drive safely and that's the number one thing."
Sergeant Christensen adds that drivers should pay close attention to new schools this year, along with new school bus routes.
He also says it's important to obey school crossing guard stop signs -- for the safety of our children. And if that's not enough incentive, blowing through a crossing guard stop sign comes with an enhanced fine.
