INDIANAPOLIS — Capping off an undefeated season, the 13 girls on the Grandville Little League All-Star team are now headed to the Little League World Softball Series in Portland, Oregon.
Following an overnight rain delay, the team claimed the Central Regional Championship in a 5-1 victory over the Illinois-River Forest Youth team, which means the girls remain undefeated.
“I could not be more proud of my team. These girls fought through each tournament as a cohesive unit to make it to the World Series,” Grandville All-Stars Manager Dave VanderMeer said in a news release. “The only thing that makes me more proud of them winning is the way they care about each other. I can’t wait to see them compete at the World Series.”
The All-Star team was selected after the Grandville Little League season. The team defeated 17 other All-Star teams to win the Central Region Championship, according to the release.
“I love playing softball with these girls. I am proud that our team has earned this once in a lifetime experience,” said Ellen Derrer, one of the players on the team. “We can’t wait to represent our community at the Little League Softball World Series.”
The Grandville All-Stars will face Asia-Pacific in their first game of the Little League Softball World Series. The team is now raising money to help pay for the girls’ trip to Portland.
The Little League Softball World Series will be held August 10-17.
