1. The Democrat National Convention kicks off this week.
Of course this comes right after the announcement that their party chairwoman resigned over claims she and democratic officials favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders.
Of course republican nominee Donald Trump had to jump in.
He called their former party chairwoman "overrated" and contrasted her with his party's chairman, calling him "the tough one and the smart one."
2. The Aldi grocery store chain is looking for new workers in a state-wide hiring spree, and anyone in the Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo areas will have some options.
It is a one day hiring blitz that runs all day Monday. It's already started and runs until 7 p.m.
One is happening at the Hyatt Place in Wyoming, and another is happening at Holiday Inn West in Kalamazoo.
Available positions include store associates, shift managers, and manager trainees.
3. The city of Grand Rapids is breaking ground on three major park improvement projects today.
Douglas, Mulick, and Camelot Parks are the last three of six parks that will be getting significant upgrades.
The upgrades include new picnic areas, playground equipment, and more depending on the park.
Mayor Rosalynn Bliss will be among those attending the three separate groundbreaking events this afternoon. Construction has already started on the other three parks - Campau, Mary Waters, and Dickinson.
The improvements were made possible by voter approved property tax millage.
4. Verizon has purchased Yahoo for $4.83 billion.
The deal will mark the end of Yahoo as an independent company, which was started back in 1994.
Analysts say the transaction will boost Verizon’s AOL internet business by giving it access to Yahoo's internet advertising tools. Yahoo has an estimated one billion regular users.
5. It's no surprise our cell phones have become an important part of most of our lives, but new research shows just how much we depend on them.
It turns out on average cellphone user touches their phone 2,617 times every day, and extreme cellphone users touch their phones more than 5,400 times.
Actions like typing, tapping, and swiping the phone's screen were counted as a touch.
The study also found the average user spent 145 minutes on their phones and engaged in 76 phone sessions per day.
