CASS COUNTY, Mich. — An 84-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after falling off a floating lawn chair in a Cass County lake.
According to Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr., at 3:10 p.m. Thursday Cass County marine deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call in the 61000 block of Lake Street on the west side of Diamond Lake. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies were able to determine through witness statements that Paul Schafer, 84, of Bremen, Ind., had been sitting in a floating lawn chair near a pier when a neighbor noticed that the man had disappeared and then observed his hat floating in the water.
Relatives quickly went to check on Schafer and discovered him underwater.
The man was pulled onto the dock where he was unresponsive. CPR was started by relatives and neighbors.
Schafer was transported to South Bend (Ind.) Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.
Cass County marine deputies were assisted at the scene by Life Care ambulance, the Cassopolis Central Fire Department, Michigan State Police and the Cass County Road Patrol.
