ALMA, Mich. (AP) — Police say a 7-year-old boy accidentally fatally shot his father with a high-powered rifle while his family was asleep in their mid-Michigan home.
The Alma Police Department says officers responded about 12:15 a.m. Friday to the home following a report of the shooting. A statement from police says the boy had removed the gun from a locked case after finding the keys. An autopsy is planned.
The statement says Child Protective Services is assisting the family. Alma is located about 105 miles northwest of Detroit.
The Saginaw News reports other police and sheriff’s officials assisted the Alma department at the scene. The shooting is under investigation.
