YORKTOWN, Va. -- An investigation is underway after a teenager's body was discovered along a Yorktown, Virginia, road that some say is haunted.
The victim was identified as 18-year-old Austin Baxley, of a Portsmouth. It appears Baxley suffered multiple gunshot wounds, investigators told WTVR.
"We feel for the victim and we feel for his family," York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Dennis Ivy Jr. said. "We just want to get justice and find the person, to get to the person or persons responsible."
Crawford Road is an isolated stretch of highway between York County and Newport News.
The road is considered, by some, to be haunted.
"We get people who go ghost hunting down there and we like to tell them to park safely," Ivey said. "I'm not saying the bogeyman is going to jump out of the woods, but it is just isolated."
Ivey said he did not recommend anybody driving down Crawford Road at night.
"If your car breaks down and you are by yourself, you're going to have a problem getting help," he said. "It may be hours before anyone drives down there."
Early Friday morning, just after midnight, a driver called police to report what looked like a body on the side of the road.
Deputies and medics located the body near the Tour Road overpass. The unidentified white male was pronounced dead at the scene, a sheriff’s office spokesman posted on Facebook.
"This is a homicide investigation and investigators are actively pursuing leads at this time," the post continued. "The cause of death is undetermined and pending autopsy results."
