POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – I-96 has reopened after a serious crash near Coopersville.
The one-vehicle crash happened in the eastbound lanes at about 1:20 p.m. about a mile east of 68th Avenue.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department says that a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by a 21-year-old man drifted into the median and then back across both eastbound lanes. The vehicle then struck a tree head on.
The driver and another person in the vehicle were pinned in and had to be extricated. They were both air lifted to the hospital.
Eastbound I-96 was closed for roughly two hours. The westbound lanes were closed briefly to accommodate the Aero Med helicopter’s landing.
