KALAMAZOO, Mich.— The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor has added nine new charges against a driver in a crash that killed five bicyclists and injured four.
Charles Pickett will now be charged with five counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing injury, Jeff Getting announced Wednesday morning.
The charges are in wake of results from the Michigan State Police crime lab. Pickett was already charged with five counts of second degree murder.
Getting said Pickett was operating the pickup truck under the influence of a "controlled substance." He declined to identify what the substance was or if it was a legal substance.
Five people were killed June 7 when Pickett allegedly drove his pickup truck into a group on bicyclists on north Westnedge Avenue. Four people were injured and are recovering.
This is a developing story.
