Police looking for suspects after reported armed home invasion in Albion

ALBION, Mich. — Police are looking for three suspects after an armed home invasion they say happened early Monday morning.

The incident began around 4:30 a.m. when an officer in the area of the 500 block of Mechanic Street was alerted by a resident that several people carrying weapons had gone into a nearby home.

The Albion Department of Public Safety says that four people armed with handguns broke into a home and demanded money. They say the suspects told the residents they knew they had money inside the house. Three people inside reported being assaulted. One of the victims was taken to the hospital for head injuries, but  was later released.

A 4-year-old child was also in the home at the time, but was not hurt.

When the officer that had been alerted to the incident made his way towards the home in question, the suspects inside eventually became aware and tried to split. Police believe one the four suspects fired a handgun as they took off out a back door.

The suspects were initially able to escape while the first officers on scene made sure the residents were all safe.

A few hours later, around 7:00 a.m., police got a call about a man walking downtown with ripped jeans and wearing only one shoe. Police said detectives recovered a shoe near the scene of the home invasion, making this a potential person of interest.  He reportedly took off when police first tried to approach him.

He was reportedly apprehended shortly later two blocks away. A handgun was reportedly found near the area he was picked up.

The incident remains under investigation.
