Time to think mosquitoes for Memorial Day Weekend

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With every season, there will always be something that is a nuisance – whether it be snow, ice, allergies or construction. For your holiday weekend, we’re talking mosquitoes.

The Kent County Health Department is warning us all to take the appropriate measures against these pests, especially if you’re outside celebrating this weekend.

Recent threats of the Zika Virus has been worrying people the most, but KCHD believes that there is a very little risk of being bitten by a Zika-infected mosquito. What you should be concerned about the most is the West Nile Virus.

The best way to reduce your risk is to avoid being bitten. Wear long sleeves or stay indoors during the most active mosquito times, which is dusk and dawn. KCHD advises when it comes to using repellents, use one that contains DEET, and always follow the instructions on the label.
