Griffins beat Monsters, 5-4, avoid elimination

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Griffins are still alive in the Calder Cup Playoffs, winning game 4 of the Central Division Finals, 5-4, against the Lake Erie Monsters at Van Andel Arena on Tuesday.  Andreas Athanasiou scored the game winner with 1:55 left to play.

The Griffins staved off elimination with the win, their first of the best-of-seven series.  Lake Erie leads the series, 3-1, with game 5 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday.

The Griffins trailed, 4-1, late in the 2nd period, before roaring back to tie the score with three straight goals in just over five minutes.  Anthony Mantha got the first on a power play with 55 seconds left in the second period, then Louis-Marc Aubry scored at 3:12 of the third, followed by a goal from Robbie Russo at 4:40.

Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha scored the other two goals for the Griffins.  Tommy McCollum started in goal and gave up 4 goals on 21 shots, before Jared Careau came in to make 13 saves.
