Michigan traffic deaths jump 10% in 2015

LANSING, Mich. – Traffic deaths in Michigan jumped 10% in 2015 after dropping the year before.

Michigan saw 963 traffic deaths in 2015, according to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center on Monday.  In 2014, there were 876.

The largest jump happened among bicyclist fatalities, which were up 57%.  In 2015, there were 33 bicyclist fatalities compared to 21 in 2014.

Other increases were noted in motorcyclist fatalities, up 29% (138 in 2015) and alcohol-involved traffic deaths, up 28% (303 in 2015). Drug-involved fatal crashes went up 19% (179 in 2015) and teen traffic deaths also went up 23% (98 in 2015). Pedestrian fatalities rose 15% (170 in 2015).

Other crash stats that showed increases included cell phone-involved crashes up 13% and deer-involved crashes up 3%.
