IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Authorities in Ionia County are issuing a warning about a phone scam involving Consumers Energy.

The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office said they’ve received several reports from people who claim they’ve been called by someone pretending to be a representative with the utility company.

The “representative” states there is a billing mix-up and a refund will be sent to to the account holder. But to maintain services until a certain date, the account holder must send money.

Authorities warn, as with any phone scam, to not confirm or deny any personal information and to never send money. They are urging all to hang up and ignore this call.

Consumers Energy customers with billing questions can contact their customer service line at 1-800-477-5050.
