CASS COUNTY, Mich. — A teenage girl died after being hit by a pick-up truck that didn’t stop at a stop sign, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies say.
It happened around 11:40 A.M. Tuesday morning. Witnesses told deputies that a pick-up truck driven by Jeffrey Jackson, 25, from Niles disregarded a stop sign as he was driving east bound on Pine Lake Street in Jefferson Township.
Jackson’s truck hit a north bound vehicle on Dailey Road driven by 16-year-old Makayla McKenzie of Edwardsburg. Her vehicle left the roadway and turned over, landing upside down. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A GoFundMe pagewas set up for McKenzie to help pay for her funeral expenses.
McKenzie had two passengers in her vehicle: Edwardsburg residents Camryn Raab, 16, and Hannah Philpot, 16. They were both injured and taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
Alcohol and seat belt use are unknown at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
