DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers have optioned outfielder Tyler Collins to Triple-A Toledo, although manager Brad Ausmus said the move was not related to the obscene gesture Collins directed at booing home fans Monday.
Detroit activated closer Francisco Rodriguez from the family medical emergency list.
Collins went 2 for 20 in 10 games with the Tigers this season. After losing a ball in the lights Monday and hearing the crowd’s reaction, Collins extended the middle finger on his left hand and waved it from right to left. He apologized afterward, saying he “lashed out completely inappropriately” and was “embarrassed” about what happened.
Ausmus said Collins was sent down because he’s been scuffling and the team thought it could use an extra pitcher right now.
