TALLMADGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A motorcycle rider was hospitalized with a broken collarbone after a crash on Sunday.

At 12:45 p.m. Sunday, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on Leonard Road east of Linden Drive in Tallmadge Township. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered that Christian Bergsma, 34, of Grand Rapids had been injured. He was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation showed that Bergsma was riding a 2013 Kawasaki 900  motorcycle westbound on Leonard when a friend riding a motorcycle next to him began to drift over his way. Bergsma swerved to avoid contact with the other motorcycle and lost control of his own motorcycle, which then left the roadway and entered a ditch.

Bergsma was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
