GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department were taken to the hospital after a suspected drunk driver hit their patrol car from behind Saturday morning.

It happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Madison SE. The officers were clearing a welfare-check call in the area, unrelated to the driver, when their car was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu.

Police said it was likely speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.  GRPD told FOX 17 the driver was a 41-year-old Grand Rapids woman who was traveling 40 mph at the time of the crash.

The two officers were taken to the hospital and are now recovering at home. The accident also caused substantial damage to their patrol car.

The female driver involved is currently in police custody.
