Man arrested after biting and assaulting officers

KALAMAZOO, Mich.— A 21-year-old man is in custody after resisting arrest and assaulting Kalamazoo Public Safety officers Friday night.

Officers say they responded to a call around 8pm at the 500 block of Ada Street on a report of man with a gun hidden in the waistband of his pants.

When officers arrived at the scene they found the man matching the description and tried to detain him. That’s when a struggle began.

Officers say during the struggle the suspect tried to disarm the officers by grabbing their holstered guns, but failed.  He then bit one of the officers on the leg twice.

A taser was then used to neutralize the suspect.  Once the man was handcuffed he spit in the officer’s face.

Officers say they found a .22 caliber handgun when they searched the suspect.  They say a file check of the handgun reveals that is was reported stolen from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.

The officer that was bitten in the incident was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries and has been released.

The suspect was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of firearm during the commission of a felony, and attempting to disarm a police officer.
