OSHTEMO TWP, Mich. — Kalamazoo deputies say a man had a screwdriver in his possession when he was found beating another man.

It happened around 9 p.m. Thursday night at the Centre Apartments in Oshtemo Township. Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies say they were initially called to the area on an assault call. The township fire department was at the complex responding to a fire alarm around the same time deputies arrived.

The dispatch center received a 911 call about an another assault happening in the same building the fire alarm had been triggered. Deputies say they found a subject there actively assaulting one of the residents. The subject – a Kalamazoo man in his mid-twenties – was subdued by Michigan State Troopers and arrested. The subject suffered minor injuries during the arrest.

Capt. Jim VanDyken with the Sheriff’s department says the man had a screwdriver when he was arrested. Authorities determined that he was responsible for two felonious assaults as well as two counts of home invasion, but his name hasn’t been released at this time.

The victim – a middle-aged man – suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies haven’t worked out a motive for the attack yet, but are calling it random at this point in the investigation.
