INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a 2-year-old boy shot and killed himself after taking a gun from his mother’s purse on the kitchen counter when she wasn’t watching.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say officers found the child with a single gunshot wound when they arrived at the home around 9 p.m. Wednesday. The child died at a children’s hospital.
Police said in a news release Thursday that the mother is cooperating with detectives who questioned her before she was released.
Police say the mother and child were the only people at home when the shooting happened.
Police have not released the identities of the mother and child.
