BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — A driver was killed when his car crashed while fleeing from police early Sunday morning.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, Barry County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the intersection of West Quimby Road and Tanner Lake Road with a male and a female arguing. Troopers from the Michigan State Police’s Wayland Post located the vehicle — a Pontiac Grand Prix — and attempted to contact the occupants, but the vehicle fled eastbound on Quimby before crashing about a fourth of a mile east of Tanner Lake.
The car’s driver — David Scott, 35, of Hastings — was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and troopers said alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash.
A 28-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Barry County Sheriff’s Department, Mercy EMS, Hastings Fire Department and Aircare.
The incident remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
