Man sentenced for embezzling from fallen officer fundraiser

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A man who admitted to embezzling from a memorial fundraiser for a fallen Kalamazoo Public Safety officer has been sentenced.

Joseph Weeks, Sr. will spend 150 days in jail and will spend three years on probation for two felony charges.  Weeks was accused of embezzling funds from the 2014 EZ Memorial Ride which was a memorial fundraiser for Officer Eric Zapata, who was killed in the line of duty in April of 2011.

Weeks entered a guilty plea to Embezzlement of $200 to $1,000 from a non-profit and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm in February.

A determination of restitution will be determined in May.
