Bank robber who threatened tellers with bomb, anthrax, sentenced

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Lawton man charged in robbing two banks has been sentenced to at least nearly five years in prison.

Douglas Wolthuis was sentenced in federal court in Grand Rapids for robbing the Fifth Third Bank in Kalamazoo in April of 2015 and a Chase Bank in Battle Creek in June of 2015.  In the Kalamazoo robbery, Wolthuis had clear plastic tubing running from his face to his jacket and was carrying two bags.  He told the teller that he had a bomb.  In the Battle Creek robbery, Wolthuis was wearing a white jumpsuit and a mask and claimed to be carrying anthrax.

Wolthuis was sentenced in federal court to 57 to 71 months in prison.
