COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- The West Michigan Whitecaps will be defending their Midwest League championship with speed. Lots of speed.
"I don't think we are going to have much power, especially in this ballpark as we know from the past couple of seasons," third-year manager Andrew Graham said Wednesday. "We got to find ways to win games and that is the way we are going to play this year."
And that speed won't just be utilized on the bases. Expect to see it help out on defense too -- possibly at the expense of some souvenirs.
"You look at our outfield -- I'm sitting here with Derek (Hill) and Brownie (Rashad Brown) and (Jose) Azocar and we are going to be running down -- I don't really know if there are going to be many foul balls for them to get because we might be catching them all and running them down," first-year Whitecap outfielder Cam Gibson said.
The Whitecaps open their season on the road on Thursday at South Bend. Their home opener at Fifth Third Ballpark is Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against South Bend.
