Guitar-making business in Kalamazoo getting new ownership

Posted

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A business that took over Kalamazoo’s Gibson Guitar factory to keep making guitars after it was closed is getting a new ownership group.

Kyle Sobko, marketing director for Heritage Guitar Inc., says in a statement that the group is led by private local investors who have a long track record of revitalizing Kalamazoo-area buildings and businesses. Names of those involved weren’t released.

After Gibson closed its factory on Kalamazoo’s north side in 1984, a number of former employees formed Heritage Guitar and continued making guitars. The statement says current owners who make guitars under the Gibson and Heritage brands will stay active in the business.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports it’s not known how the ownership change may impact the former Gibson factory, which is owned by 225 Parsons LLC.
