PLAINWELL, Mich. -- Lanterns were lit Friday night for a young woman killed in a car accident earlier this week.

A vigil was held at Plainwell High School for senior Murphy Peters, who died Tuesday after the car she was driving collided with a box truck near the intersection of 102nd Avenue and M-40 in Allegan County.

Kaitlin Oaks, a close friend of Peters, said that nearly 300 people came out to show their love and support.

Allegan County Sheriff's deputies say Peters may have been using her cellphone when she ran a stop sign. Her car was struck by the box truck and sent her car crashing into a nearby home.

Funeral services for Peters will be held Tuesday March 29 at 11 a.m. at Doster Community Reformed Church, located at 12145 Doster Road in Plainwell, according to her obituary.
