GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– The Grand Rapids Fire Department, Ionia Department of Public Safety, and First Alert remind families of the importance of carbon monoxide alarms.
First Alert has donated 200 carbon monoxide alarms to GRFD and 50 carbon monoxide alarms to IDPS to assist with this educational outreach.
Carbon monoxide alarms do not last forever. A Michigan law went into effect in 2010 that required CO alarms in new and existing single and multi-family dwellings, but alarms installed in 2010 need to be replaced now.
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends that homes have carbon monoxide alarms installed in a central location outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of your home.
A limited number of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are available as part of the Grand Rapids Fire Department Residential Safety Program. You must call 311 to participate.
