Frankly Speaking: Liquid Start, Frozen Finish

Posted

It’s finally the end of the week!  No one has won the Powerball, so you’re probably headed to work today wondering how the weekend will begin.

DMA_Temps (1)

Temps this morning have really stayed at or above freezing for the most part.  Because of this, we’ve seen more rain than any of the frozen precipitation (not that we haven’t seen a bit of that at times.)

1 (2)

Radar scan just before 9 AM this morning shows not much of the pink color (freezing rain) and that trend will continue as our temps warm up this afternoon.

RPM 1 (12)

Future Track shows by this evening, rain is expected.  It won’t be an entirely rainy evening, but the frozen precip holds off until Saturday night.

RPM 2 (10)

By midnight, temps remain in the upper 30s, so the precipitation remains just rain for this time frame.

RPM 3 (9)

The transition to frozen precip doesn’t begin until late evening Saturday night.  Colder air filters in and we’ll see slick conditions begin to develop.

RPM 5 (5)

As cold air move in from the NW, snow bands will begin to increase to areas for areas further south as well.  This is when the accumulation will start to occur.

RPM 6 (2)

After a midnight high temp near 32 degrees, temps will fall throughout Sunday, making conditions more slick as snow begins to pile up.  It will also be very windy Sunday, and hazardous conditions along the roadways will develop.

Garry RPM Snow

Our in house model snowfall total already puts between 3-5 inches in many areas by early Sunday morning.  This will be very possible, and really is very dependent on when the change to snow occurs.  That’s why areas south and east don’t have totals quite as high.

3DayForecast_Full_Tomorrow (3)

Weekend forecast includes melting the old snow/ice mix off to start, before the rain changes to snow by evening.  Much colder air will arrive Sunday into early next week.

Advanced Tracking (3)

Bulk of the cold air continues as ANOTHER round of snow is expected Tuesday as another disturbance arrives and gives us a good opportunity for some lake effect snow that will stretch inland.

It seems as if I’ve planned a trip just in time for this winter storm to arrive, as myself and Floor Director Mike Davis (with several of my childhood/college friends) head to Vegas for a few days.  Enjoy!  Our entire weather team will keep you posted at http://fox17online.com/weather
