NEW YORK (AP) — Pat Harrington, Jr., an actor-comedian who won fame as the cocky handyman on “One Day at a Time,” has died, according to manager Phil Brock.

Harrington, who played apartment super Dwayne Schneider on the CBS sitcom, died Wednesday at age 86 in Los Angeles of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

“One Day at a Time” starred Bonnie Franklin as the divorced mother of two teenage daughters who returns with them to her hometown of Indianapolis to begin life anew as a single woman. The apartment’s superintendent, Schneider, soon became a family pal and a viewer favorite.

The hit series aired from 1975 to 1984 and won Harrington an Emmy.

His other credits include the Danny Thomas sitcom, “Make Room for Daddy,” ”The Love Boat” and “Hot in Cleveland.”
