Winter to bring record warmth and thunderstorms

Posted

The second full day of winter may bring record high temperatures and thunderstorms to the area.

A storm system will track west of the state on Wednesday, keeping all of West Michigan in the “warm sector.” Temperatures will approach 60 degrees during the afternoon. The record high for Grand Rapids on Wednesday is 57 degrees, set back in 1982. Rain is likely during the afternoon with the chance of late afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

The Day 3 Outlook from the Storm Predication Center has all of Michigan in a “General Outlook” for thunderstorms. A “Marginal Risk” of severe thunderstorms is located south over parts of Indiana and Illinois. This risk area may get changed as we get closer to Wednesday.
