GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An alleged drunk driver is in custody, and his vehicle is drying out, after he crashed into a retention pond late Monday night, police say. It happened shortly before 11:00 p.m. near the intersection of East Beltline and Leonard Street in Grand Rapids Township.
Police say a man driving a Pontiac Aztek lost control of his vehicle and drove straight into the retention pond at Eaglecrest Office Park and Condominiums.
The driver was able to get out of the sinking SUV before it became fully submerged. When police arrived, they learned that the suspect had just been involved in a hit-and-run crash with another car. There were no injuries in either incident.
Police took the suspect into custody. From there, it was a lengthy operation of trying to get the vehicle out of the water. After several hours, teams were able to remove the Aztek shortly after 3:00 a.m.
