Man accidentally shoots self in chest while hunting

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A man from Homer was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a shotgun.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies said the accidental shooting happened in the 22000 block of W. Drive South in Clarendon Township at around 10 Sunday morning.

A 21-year-old man had been out hunting and was attempting to take off his jacket when he dropped his .12 gauge semi-auto shotgun. It fired a slug into his chest.

The man was taken to Bronson Kalamazoo Hospital via West Michigan AirCare for what police said are non-life threatening injuries. Investigators are treating the incident as accidental.

Michigan State Police released a series of tips aimed at keeping hunters safe this season.
