ORANGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 20-year-old man is dead after leading Michigan State Police on a chase Monday afternoon in Ionia County.

Police say that an Ionia County Sheriff’s deputy went to pull over a vehicle on a traffic violation, but the driver didn’t stop and led the deputy on a chase.  The deputy stopped chasing the vehicle after a short time and dispatch issued a “be on the lookout” advisory to the county.

About 20 minutes later, a Michigan State Police trooper saw the suspected vehicle stopped at Hinds Road and David Highway in Orange Township.  As the trooper pulled up, the suspect drove off of Hinds Road into a cornfield, then looped back onto the road. The trooper found the suspect’s vehicle a short distance down Hinds Road, crashed into a tree.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s identity and why he fled police have not yet been released.  We’ll have more details when they become available.
