One arrested after short police pursuit in Portage

PORTAGE, Mich. — One person has been taken into custody, after police say he led them on a short pursuit in Portage early Monday morning.

It happened at approximately 3:24 a.m. on S. Westnedge near I-94.  Police attempted to stop a car for expired plates, but the driver refused to stop.

The driver stopped momentarily, and a passenger got out of the vehicle before the driver continued his attempt to evade police.  The suspect came to a stop in the are of 1700 Kirkwood Avenue and tried running away from officers.  Police caught him a short distance away.

The 34-year-old suspect had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, and now faces multiple new charges.
