KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- One man is in custody after police say he was involved in a shooting, and then crashed into two police vehicles before officers were able to place him under arrest.

It first started at around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.  An off-duty Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer heard gunshots near E. Michigan and King Highway, and saw two vehicles speeding away from the area.  At that same time, dispatchers were taking calls for shots being fired on Riverview, with witnesses providing similar vehicle descriptions.

The off-duty officer followed one of the vehicles in his unmarked patrol car until other officers were able to intercept the suspect at the intersection of Amsterdam and N. Westnedge.  The driver, however, refused to stop.  He backed up and struck the off-duty officer's vehicle and sped away.  He then crashed into a marked patrol car, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

There were no injuries, and the suspect was taken into custody.  The 26-year-old man from Kalamazoo now faces charges that include Fleeing & Eluding, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Firearm offenses.
