FOX 17, The Michigan Lottery and MSU Basketball Coach Tom Izzo have teamed up for the Excellence in Education Awards.  Each week, we will salute an educator who goes above and beyond in the classroom.  Here’s a look at this week’s winner: Amanda Thorpe from Portage.

Not only is Amanda Thorpe a gifted history teacher, she's the advisor for the school's journalism team.  She runs the student newspaper at Portage Community High School which is an alternative school.

"As a teacher, you always hope to have an impact, but you don’t always get to find that out," says Amanda. "So when you do, and you get to hear students speak of you that way, it really reminds you of why you’re here."

Amanda received a check for $500 from the Michigan Lottery and her classroom gets a $500 grant.
