OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. – A West Michigan man could be in trouble for allegedly shooting a bear in Oceana County in front of its cubs.

The man has not been identified, but the Oceana County Prosecutor confirms that a warrant has been issued charging the man with unlawfully taking the animal.  The Department of Natural Resources confirms that the man had a license to hunt bear, but it is still illegal to kill a mother bear that is in the company of her cubs.

The bear was killed in Colfax Township on September 23.

The hunter, who published reports say is from Ottawa County, faces a misdemeanor charge that carries a possible 90-day jail sentence and loss of hunting privileges.
