Kalamazoo officer assaulted during chase

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A Kalamazoo Public Safety officer suffered a minor injuries when a suspect assaulted him after being cornered during a chase.

The incident happened late Thursday morning in the area of Division and Washington Streets in the Edison Neighborhood.

Officers say they were called by a 14-year-old girl who reported that man was following her and harassing her. She said she was walking to the store when the following and harassment began.  When she came out of the store, he continued.

Officers found both the girl and the man in the 1200 block of Mills Street.  The man fled and the officers chased him and cornered him behind a garage.  At that point, the suspect assaulted an officer and fled.  Another officer tried subduing the man with a taser, but it was ineffective and the man got away.  The girl was not hurt.

The suspect was last seen in the 1200 block of Race Street. He is described as a black male, about 6’2″ tall and thin.  He was last seen wearing a black varsity style jacket, black pants and a black knit hat.
