OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. – Formal charges have been filed against an Indiana man accused of starting a pile-up on I-196 that killed a teen in August.
Travis Fox of Crown Point, Indiana has been charged with one count of a moving violation causing death in the August 3 crash that killed David Talsma, 13. Talsma, of Hudsonville, was riding in a car driven by his sister, Aliya, 16.
Fox allegedly told deputies at the scene he was eating a sandwich and looked down at his GPS at the time of the crash. Traffic had stopped for a construction zone on eastbound I-196 near the M-6 interchange.
Five vehicles total were involved in the crash. Nine people were hurt.
The charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail. Fox has not yet been arraigned.
