HOLLAND, Mich. – The driver who was waved on through traffic and hit a bicyclist killing him has been sentenced to community service and probation.

Christopher DenHerder was sentenced last week to 200 hours of community service and 18 months probation for his role in the crash that killed a 47-year-old Holland man.

Police say Denherder was heading west on 18th Street at River Avenue on May 2nd.  Traffic was backed up on River and another driver waiting in traffic montioned to Denherder to continue on 18th Street.  The bicyclist was heading northbound and had the right-of-way when he was struck by Denherder’s vehicle.  The man suffered a closed-head injury and died at the hospital.
